Fifteen cyclists took to the Border roads on Sunday 21st August to raise funds for the Katie
McKerracher Trust as part of the Ken Laidlaw Sportif. There were two routes – 52 miles
and 105 miles – with participants taking between 3 and 7 hours to complete their chosen
route. The fundraisers were kitted out in specially designed cycle shirts, and were given
the honour of leading the event through Hawick Town Centre (see photo). We would like
to thank Hawick Cycle Club for its generosity and for organising such a fantastic event.
We would also like to thank all of the supporters who cheered us on and ran the essential
feed stations.
Photos available here , here and here (many thanks to Ian Bell).

Scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital are starting a phase I clinical trial of a vaccine-based treatment for Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Gliomas, the deadliest childhood cancer. Click here for article.
And in the UK the McClay Foundation has awarded Samanatha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust £13,000 towards one of their research projects; a phase II study of temozolomide with radiotherapy for diffuse pontine gliomas (DIPG) in children.

Three weeks today we should be looking back on our achievements in the Border hills! 18 hardy souls are tackling the Ken Laidlaw Sportif – either 55 miles or 105 miles on a push bike! I was out yesterday morning in the mist with the newest member of the team (David Lunn) for a gentle 40 mile training run. And I will be out with the Edinburgh crew on Tuesday night too.
If you want to catch any of the action on Sunday 21st August then may I suggest the closest thing we have to Alpe D’Huez – The Swire, just outside Ettrickbridge between 10:15 and 11:15 (mile 22 on the map – http://veloroutes.org/bikemaps/?route=62754#)
